Mustafa Salim,(in Green Cirle) a 67-year-old jeweler will not forget this bus ride in a hurry. Mustafa Salim boards Bus No1 from Mohammed Ali Road, carrying precious gems worth Rs 1 lakh in his pocket. He sits on the seat meant for handicapped commuters, since other seats are taken. A man pretending to be visually-challenged boards the bus from Crawford Market, and accidentally sits on Salims lap. The blind mans accomplices urge Salim to vacate the seat.
Salim complies, and stands next to the seat. The accomplices surround Salim. They expertly slash his pocket, and remove the precious gems. Salim has no inkling of whats going on around him. The grinning blind man gets off at the next stop followed by his accomplices. It has been a successful ride. A fellow passenger points out the torn pocket.
Salim realises he has been robbed. Investigating officer, Sanjay Dhonnar, MRA Marg police station, confirmed the complaint has been filed and they have registered a case of pickpocketing under Section 379 of IPC. We have managed to receive the CCTV footage from the BEST. We are now in search of the culprits. Dhonnar added that various cases of pickpocketing in BEST buses and bus stops in nearby areas have been reported earlier too. We have caught three people for similar offences, he said.
