Communist Karat AND Sic Policy

CPM’s dubious policies have led it to its worst ever election performance in free India’s history in the recently concluded general elections.  Alas, the party and its comrades it seems are yet to come to terms with their defeat and are still in their usual uncanny mental state, far away from the ground realities of India.  CPM government in West Bengal is the only state which is yet to ban, what is now increasingly seen as the biggest challenge to the Indian government, bigger than even the big K problem, Maoists.

While a large portion of the country is reeling under the menace called Maoist and all the affected state governments and the center has now banned it, the left government in West Bengal is still talking about fighting it politically.  This euphuism being displayed by Karat and company is going to cost the country dear, more so when the Maoists have now increasingly started targeting civilians and are disrupting life and property with more than a vengeance.

Mr. Karat has got a great gift of managing his double speak in a world class fashion.  While he is always seen advocating banning organizations like VHP, RSS, etc., at the drop of the hat, he in an unabashedly manner is advocating not to ban Maoists.  Karat and co. should realize that they being a responsible political party of India needs to work in the interest of the nation and not in the interest of some book written a century ago and in a different context.  The left in India is right now a marginalized organization and they should realize that they are working in a direction which is only going to make their fall sound ever louder than expected.  Being in power for the last few decades have made them very arrogant in their style of functioning and the core group of people who were supporting them all though these years have slowly started realizing the damage they are causing to the state and the country and that support group is now drifting apart fast.

The CPM used to tout itself as the party of principles, but that moral high ground has also now been reduced to mere opportunistic talk with the party general secretary openly supporting tainted Kerala state CPM general secretary Mr. Vijayan who is one of the accused in the SNC Lavalin corruption case.  The general public may not be suffering from the selective amnesia problem which the party is suffering from and would like it to stand up against corruption even if it is being committed by its own man.

The last nail in the coffin of the misdemeanors being conducted by the party was on display when it failed to take effective action against the Maoists in Lalgarh.  Given the opinion of the general public, CPM is going to face an uphill task to retain its bastion as it has become very arrogant and is blatantly ignoring the will of the public who has brought them to power repeatedly over the last few decades in West Bengal.  The values for which communism was developed as an ideology was upliftment of common man and fulfilling his aspirations, but CPM has been an utter failure on this front.

Every great ideology or belief has got people who interpret the ideology in a very fundamentalistic way and that is why we have Al Qaeda and Taliban who have their own interpretation of Islam, closer home we have VHP and RSS with their own interpretation of Hinduism and we have Mr. Karat and party who have their interpretation of communism which appears very fundamentalist and anti-national as is reflected by the stand the party has taken on a number of issues concerning national interest and the well being of general public.

It is high time that CPM return to the core values and ethos it used to stand for, be pragmatic in its approach to the needs of common man, not view every issue through the lens of China, and stop the double standards it has adopted in every field ranging from corruption to industrialization.

Karl Marx once said, “History repeats itself, first as tragedy and second as farce.”  Last general election was a historic event with the party showing its worst ever performance and now it should take every possible step to stop becoming a farce.
