In Meltdown, Ten key IT deals of 2008: Ten deals which brought cheer to India IT Industry

Year 2008 was tough for every industry all across the globe. Big biz world become buzzword. The mayhem in the financial market pushed the life of every human being in the corner.  Recession and Depression become every household lunch and dinner.  Our country most precious jewel  IT industry were also down but not out, they fight back and did manage to get some of the best IT deals and brought cheer to our Indian industry in the year when almost every country were going through recession.  This shows that our industries can fight against the odds.

Here are the some of the key deals which brought cheer to India IT and Outsourcing Industry.

1.     India’s largest IT Company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) bagged the country’s largest e-governance contract to computerize Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). Under the contract TCS will provide smart cards to around 1.5 crore industrial workers across the country.

2.     Software exporter HCL Technologies Ltd piped larger rivals, TCS and Wipro, to clinch a large CIS (core insurance solution) implementation deal from the public sector National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL).

3.     Another crucial deal in TCS kitty was the second largest e-project contract from the government of India for issuing passport to its citizens.

4.     Another major deal of the year was bagged by the Bangalore-based Infosys Technologies. The company recently bagged a five-year, multi-million dollar global services deal from British drug maker AstraZeneca Plc.

5.     In one of the biggest deals of the year, India’s sixth largest IT exporter, Tech Mahindra, won a $700-million contract from a key stakeholder British Telecom (BT).

6.     In probably one of the first deals won by an Indian IT company in 2008, India’s third largest IT giant, Wipro won a multi-year, $600-million (Rs2,358 crore) deal to manage Aircel Ltd’s IT infrastructure.

7.     Telecom software services firm Tech Mahindra also signed a $250 million, seven-year contract from a North American telecom services firm.

8.     Country’s top software exporter bagged another multi-million dollar deal in its kitty this year. Tata Consultancy Services signed a five-year multi-million-dollar contract from Singapore Airlines Cargo.

9.     In October, the country’s largest private sector telecom operator, Bharti Airtel entered into a technology tie-up with Infosys Technologies Ltd to roll out its Direct-to-Home (DTH) television services.

10.  In March 2008, Cognizant Technology Solutions took over the operations of T-Systems India and its 1,150 employees as part of a system integration alliance with the company’s parent, Deutsche Telekom.
