India flawed by focus on sex in campaign against AIDS: study

Recent study said India is making big by mistake assuming that HIV- AIDS mostly spread by sexual intercourse and especially with prostitutes. It is correct that people do get the infected with HIV-AIDS from prostitutes but this is not only source of overwhelmingly spreading of this deadly virus in our beloved country. According to UNAIDS India got 5.7 million people living with HIV-AIDS, the highest figure in the world. If India needs to restrict this figure and wants reduce the figure in coming years then she needs to start programs which educate the people about all the sources of catching this deadly virus.

The health awareness programs which India is running at the moment is not capable of educating the people of all others sources by which they can get caught HIV-AIDS.

If Government of India keep ignoring threats from other sources in health awareness programs running to educate people about HIV-AIDS, in particular the re-use of unsterile instruments in hospitals, cosmetic services, dental surgeries and tattoo parlours, then I wont be surprised if this figure get double in coming years.

India is considered by many specialists to be an easy target for AIDS, despite the health authorities’ insistence that they are making headway against the disease.

In May, the Geneva-based agency UNAIDS said India had 5.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS — the highest figure in the world, ahead of South Africa where the figure stands at 5.5 million. The government says the tally is 5.2 million.

The new study, published by Britain’s prestigious Royal Society of Medicine, does not wade into the row over these figures, but instead lashes India’s assumption that sex, especially with prostitutes, is the main driver for new infections.

    That is a good study. Our people always have a tendency to think of a sex act when they hear the word “AIDS”, isn’t it? Our people take the saying “ignorance is bliss” too seriously :)

    If you see how the media and political leaders function – you can easily make out : they both cater to Populist Measures.

    Newer Laws are introduced to satisfy populist/rhetorical tendencies. News is reported on the same basis.

    So, its not surprising – that AIDS in india is largely not seen as a disease that can kill people, but as something that is acquired via illegitimate bheavior…

    Populism will lead us nowhere.

    Thats the problem we need to educate people about AIDS in full manner. Like you said Populism will lead us nowhere, I agreed with it.
